Only in Oklahoma

We have a local stink going on here in Oklahoma that I feel that I need to share.

The Qur'an was given out to legislators as a centennial gift (Happy Birthday, Oklahoma!), and several have banded together to "just say no" to the book.

Here was one of the lead legislator's comments on why he would not accept the book: "Most Oklahomans do not endorse the idea of killing innocent women and children in the name of ideology." Last time I checked, the Muslims I know in Tulsa are not endorsing the idea, either.

Now, I have many thoughts on this, but I just want to share one. What happens when we sit idly by and let our legislators make a mockery out of our pluralistic society?

The Islamic community in my state faces similar problems. It seems that certain (majority) groups are allowed to be as viral and hostile as they want, but the minorities are demonized for a few bad apples. If it won't cost you your job, my only advice is to be vocal. That's what I've been doing -- and it will probably cost me my job. Queen Elizabeth, monarch that she was, had the right idea, "no desire to make windows into men's souls." Good luck.
